2019 Buying Guide: Air Purifiers for Pet Owners

Pet Odors

Do you have one or more pets in your home? If so, you are probably familiar with the various pet odors that may occur, right?

While you love your pet and constantly browse the local pet stores and even Instapainting’s sale page to see the next great deal you can get on pet related items, the odors and potential allergies they cause aren’t as welcome. But, what can you do?

The best approach to solving this problem is to invest in a quality air purifier. The only question is – which one? There’s a huge selection of air purifiers available online targeted at pet owners, so how do you know which one to choose? Keep reading to find out.

Consider the Purifier Options

When you are ready to purchase an air purifier to help with pet related odors, one of the first things to consider is the type of purifier you need. There are several to choose from.

HEPA Air Purifiers

These are considered one of the best options when it comes to pets. It’s estimated that HEPA filters can get virtually all of the pet dander out of the air, along with other allergens, in the air.

UV Purifiers

The UV purifier doesn’t require a filter. Instead, UV light is used to help sanitize the air Unfortunately, the purifiers are not effective against pet odor and dander because they only target mold spores, viruses, and bacteria.

Negative Ion Generators/Ionizers

Similar to the UV purifiers, these don’t use filters. Instead, they will create negative ions, which attach to various contaminants in the air. This causes them to clump all together and fall to a nearby surface or the ground. They aren’t effective at getting rid of all types of allergens, and they aren’t effective against pet odors, either.

Activated Carbon Air Purifiers

Another option that’s not ideal for pets because most of the smaller pieces of pet dander will pass right through the filter. However, they are good at eliminating pet related odors.

Pro Tip: Most of the air purifiers used to combat pet odors today will use a combination of all the air purification methods mentioned above. This provides the most effective odor eliminating purifier.

Important Considerations to Find the Right Pet Air Purifier

In addition to finding the right type of filter for your air purifier, there are several other considerations to keep in mind, too. These are:

Room Coverage

Before making a purchase for an air purifier, be sure you look at the size of the room it has been rated for.

Don’t use a unit in a room that is bigger than the maximum recommended. If you don’t, it won’t be able to remove the allergens and pet dander efficiently.

The Size

Be sure that the air purifier you choose isn’t going to take up too much room. Size is also a crucial consideration when it comes to how portable the unit is. If you get a bigger air purifier, it’s going to be much heavier and more challenging to move from one room to another.

Auto Mode

While this isn’t an absolute must-have, it is a convenience. With auto mode, the air purifier will monitor the air quality and set the proper fan speed automatically.

The Noise Level

Make sure you look at what customers are saying about the noise level when different fan speeds are being used. Most purifiers will make some noise when turned on the highest setting, so don’t let this be a deal breaker. What is the most important is that it remains fairly quiet at the low- or mid-settings, which are the ones that are used most of the time.

If you are ready to purchase an air purifier to cleanse the air in your home, consider the factors found here. Each one will help you find the right purifier for your home and your needs.
